There is a State Angle

Elected Republican federal representatives cannot be trusted to act to defend the honor of Confederate dead in Arlington. A Republican house member from Georgia was on the Naming Commission and he has yet to distance himself from the lies and propaganda in the report. Senator Wicker’s staff seem incapable of obtaining Wicker’s view on the Confederate Memorial at Arlington after weeks of trying to understand where the senator stands.

Tip O’Neill famously said: “all politics is local” and Brion McClanahan reinforces it. The trick was to find a local angle. That angle is “then bring them home.” I have written to my state representative and senator in Mississippi. Everyone living in Southern states should do the same.

Dear Senator England,

As you may be aware, the Federal Government is considering destroying the Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. At this point you are likely thinking that this is a federal matter, so why am I writing my state senator. There is momentum on the side of destruction. It is difficult to stop these things. A United States Congressional Commission, the Naming Commission, has recommended the action. It will likely happen. There is a state connection.

History shows us that some in the South did not like the idea of her son’s being buried away from home. In 1900 when Congress allocated money to reinter the remains of Confederates, those buried in and around Washington DC, some people in organizations like the Daughters of the Confederacy raised objections. There were calls to bring them home.

Today we need that same call. If the US Government reneges on her reconciliation actions of the early 20th century and does not honor the Southern dead at Arlington, there is little choice but to bring them home. Arlington will no longer be a National Cemetery.

I respectfully request that the great State of Mississippi make her displeasure known and that funding be provided for the reinternment of the Mississippi Confederate dead in a location where they will be honored.
